LASIK Eye Surgery in Memphis

What is LASIK?

LASIK is an FDA-approved surgical procedure intended to reduce dependency on eyeglasses or contact lenses, by reshaping the cornea so that light rays focus more precisely on the retina. With little to no downtime and discomfort, LASIK has become the procedure of choice for millions of people each year, making it the most commonly performed elective vision correction procedure!

With the precision of the Excimer Laser technology, Eye Specialty Group has helped thousands of patients, right here in Memphis, correct a wide range of prescriptions with LASIK:

The LASIK Procedure

Once arriving at our office, your eyes will be numbed with anesthetic eye drops, and an eyelid holder will be positioned to keep your eyelids open.

You will remain awake and comfortable throughout the procedure. There is typically little or no post-operative discomfort and recovery is fast!

Step One

Using WaveScan technology, we take a “fingerprint” of your eye and your optical path that is called a WavePrint map. The surgeon evaluates this detailed information.

Step 2

A laser is used to gently create a corneal flap with the safety and precision of a computer controlled laser beam. The surgeon then folds this flap back to prepare the eye for the treatment laser.

Step 3

The surgeon uses an excimer laser to apply a cool beam of light, which gently reshapes the cornea allowing images to be more sharply focused on the retina.

Step 4

Finally, the protective flap that was created in Step Two is gently placed back in its original position and begins to heal immediately.

LASIK Technology

The Eye Specialty Group Difference

Since laser vision correction was introduced more than a decade ago, there have been steady advancements in the safety and precision of LASIK. The most ground breaking of these advancements is Blade-Free iLASIK – it is 100% blade-free, 100% all-laser, and 100% customized, providing patients with the safest and most personalized approach to vision correction.

Many people don’t realize that not all LASIK is performed the same way and they’re surprised to learn that many surgeons still perform “traditional LASIK”. In traditional LASIK, the first step of the LASIK procedure is performed with a mechanical metal blade, or microkeratome. With Blade-Free iLASIK at The Eye Specialty Group the metal blade has been eliminated, and the flap is created using a computer-guided cool beam laser – giving you an unprecedented level of safety, superior outcomes, and a sense of assurance and peace of mind. Thanks to this increased level of precision, patients who have been turned down in the past for LASIK may now be candidates!

If you have questions, we have answers. Feel rest-assured in your choice for having LASIK with some of the most experienced surgeons in the area.

Potential candidates are 21 years of age, have stable vision for 12 months or longer, have healthy eyes, and have realistic expectations.

Most patients don’t need glasses for their daily activities. Due to the normal aging process of the eye, patients who are over the age of 40 will need to wear reading glasses. Qualified patients may opt for monovision LASIK, which can lessen dependence on reading glasses for patients who are interested. You will speak with our counselor at your consultation to determine what’s right for you.

Your eyes will be numbed with eye drops prior to the procedure, and you will be given a mild sedative to relax you. Some patients do experience mild discomfort during the first 12-24 hours, but this is typically just a minor scratchy sensation.

You can return to most of your usual activities, like working, driving, and exercising 1 day after surgery. Swimming should be delayed for three weeks while other contact sports should be delayed for one week.
