Our History

The Eye Specialty Group (formerly the Vitreoretinal Foundation or VRF Eye Specialty Group) was founded in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968 as a medical and surgical practice specializing in the treatment of diseases of the vitreous and retina. In 1969, the company established a retinal fellowship training program that has trained more than 70 ophthalmologists in the field of retina, now practicing throughout the United States and several other countries throughout the world.

Our doctors, in a cooperative arrangement with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital established a revolutionary treatment for retinoblastoma. The company established an outreach program, sending our doctors to locations across seven states, bringing retinal expertise not otherwise available to rural areas.

We currently see patients at our main location in Memphis near the intersection of Interstate 240 and Poplar Avenue. We also see patients at our office in Southaven and in an office at the Southern College of Optometry. We routinely treat the needs of patients needing specialty medical or surgical intervention for problems associated with the retina, cornea, glaucoma, anterior segment, refractive, pediatric ophthalmology and ocular plastics.
